If you actually need a respec, you probably can't clear the content needed to earn it. I will admit the essence system in Diablo 2 has 1 glaringly obvious flaw. I tend to think you should earn your respec in game and I really hated the way Diablo 3 just let you change to whatever you wanted at any point in time. That or you see another person playing your class and clearing content much better than you and you asked them to show you their items and skills. Back then you didn't have internet builds to copy, you just decided whether or not you enjoyed the game enough to keep trying different builds until you make one work.
